-- What Do We Do -- John Herlihy What do we do with our trust, If not to fulfill our relations with a bond that thrives? What do we do with our hopes, If not to fill the emptiness in the course of our lives? What do we do with our courage, If not to ward off any hint of impending despair? What do we do with our sincerity, If not to pour forth the truth in our nightly prayer? What do we do with our promises, If not all our promises to preserve and keep? What do we do with our sorrow, If not to allow ourselves the luxury to weep? What do we do with our ears, If not to discover the truth of every single word? What do we do with our inner voice, If not to make sure that our conscience is heard? What do we do with our eyes, If not to witness the cornucopia of nature’s beauty? What do we do with our taste, If not to experience the heart of life’s mystery? Very Socratic in nature, this piece never ceases to explore the answers with questions with answers et al. Such might be characterized as the malady of most of our nation: too many are quick with answers (opinions) without the necessary questions to establish truth vs fiction. Well penned.

This was compelling in that the questions just kept coming. I like that there were no answers per se, but answers that were part of the question, and pertinent and succinct. Two-part couplets = quintuplets. Also the coverage of human values and sensations is worded with sensitivity. My favorite lines are: �What do we do with our hopes,/If not to fill the emptiness in the course of our lives?� and �What do we do with our inner voice,/If not to make sure that our conscious is heard?� Gracious poem, John. ~~ djl
