-- When She Looked at Me --

John Herlihy

First when she looked at me,

Her gaze shed casual wonder.

Soon when she looked at me,

Her dark eyes held thunder.

Then when she looked at me,

Her vision spoke only of love.

Later when she looked at me,

Her lashes fluttered as a dove.

Whenever she looked at me,

Her eyes I could understand.

After when she looked at me,

Her eyes shone as reprimand.

Then when she looked at me,

Her deadly eyes turned cold.

Later when she looked at me,

Her gaze made me feel old.

She no longer looks at me,

Her loving gaze long gone.

Now memory looks at me,

Still echoing a somber song.

Heartbreaking, lost love. Beautifully penned, John. I enjoy your poetry so much.

I love this one, John! I love the lines, every single one. They read, to me, like pages turning, each line a page, and it swells and shrinks and changes shape, like a lava lamp. So much to ‘unpack’ (as they say in the broadcast stations these days) because this is layered, it’s 3-D, and it is sad. Marvelous term “shed casual wonder.” The progression of ‘First, Then, Later, Whenever, Now’ is so effective. Reading this I felt as though I was watching a beautiful white rose opening slowly, then seeing it darken, shrivel and fall apart ‘deadly eyes’ ‘made me feel old.’ This is my favorite of yours so far. Plenty haunting, romantic and tragic. Painfully beautiful. ~~ djl

"Dark eyes/deadly eyes." Seems to be a spiritual component in this. Obviously, there was more in her gaze than just two eyes. I wonder what she saw. Speaking from my own experiences: sometimes when people look at you, they're not looking at you, they're looking in you. An intriguing piece. Peace.... r

That is quite a change of emotions.
But life is like that. Well done.
