-- Loss --
John Herlihy
We understand blessing,
The beauty in what is given.
We don’t understand loss,
The misery in what is hidden.
Blessings go away, disappear,
They last only a short while.
Loss raises its head to appear,
And lingers a long, long while.
Loss keeps going, you know,
There when something taken.
Festers in the heart to grow,
Leaving some people forsaken.
Loss a memory to remember,
Whatever lost never forgotten.
Smoldering as an errant ember,
The sweet memories turn rotten.
Still, missing things speaks of love,
Things gone, you wish they return.
Riding high on the wings of a dove,
To land in the heart, there to burn.
Missing what is lost can be sweet,
Lifting us again from off the floor.
Missing a while and then we meet,
Whatever destiny may hold in store.
