-- The Weight of the Day –
John Herlihy
The weight of the day begins with lightness,
Dawn’s fragile light brings such peacefulness.
The day then solidifies into harsh bright light,
Resurrecting fond memories of shadowy night.
The noon sun overhead, where lies the shade?
The hours march onward as though on parade.
By mid-afternoon, the day’s weight noticeable,
As our moods shift in multiple ways untenable.
From happy to depressed, melancholy to sad,
Late afternoon, what happened to feelings glad.
No one notices the disappearance of the hours,
In the garden begin to droop the heads of flowers.
The sun runs its course, taking aim at the horizon,
As clouds streaked with crimson our eyes enliven.
Birds gather together again chatting in the trees,
Pink flamingoes clean feathers on bended knees.
The weight of the day upon us, filling our hearts,
Daylight enters a netherworld as the sun departs.
