-- LIVING ON THE EDGE OF THINGS –

John Herlihy

The purpose of edge not to fall into the darkness,

The edge offers distance with its touch of lightness.

Supreme vantage point into the unknown to gaze,

To contemplate other worlds beyond earth’s haze.

Many people live their lives on the edge of things,

Accepting and contented with whatever life brings.

Many people live quiet, noble, hard-working lives,

No matter what obstacles their destiny contrives.

Some people look on the world not fully committed,

Passing through the world as if only just permitted.

Sitting on the horizon, well placed on the world’s edge,

Gazing far into the distant beyond, as if making a pledge.

Swaying breezily in the wind atop an evergreen tree,

Such infinities of blue sky as far as the eye could see.

Riding a dandelion puff in a gentle breath of breeze,

Nestled on a dust mote, riding rays of light with ease.

The road long, the journey brief, on the edge of eternity,

Time’s arrow strung tight, aimed at the heart of destiny.

As in every journey, always ready to take one’s leave,

Time’s swift arrow now in slow motion, as if in reprieve.

To ponder the well-known adage, here today gone tomorrow,

To a place beyond the edge of things, beyond joy and sorrow.

To be content with one’s lot and accept the way that life is,

To give thanks everyday of our lives for the blessing life gives.

LIVING ON THE EDGE OF THINGS IS...CERTAINLY, A CHOICE. A VERY HEAVILY DEBATEABLE ONE, INDEED. I LIKE SECURITY...LET ME JUST BEGIN AND END IT THERE(SMILE). WELL DONE, THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

From what I read it seemed like you gave everyone the same benefits of living on the edge whether they really did or not. But I'm probably mistaken. I do see the benefits of taking risks even though they are not for the faint of heart. To go where no man goes because no man knows, is a sure way to find out. So many myths and worries have been dispelled by going to that edge and finding out that there's nothing to worry about.

Living on the edge would hope that everyone could get beyond troubles and toils and reach a stage of comfort and contemplation that poets like you have accomplished.

Many a time have I experienced such thoughts resting on a ledge of rock, the summit in clouds, the horizon of sunlit opportunity. You've captured a multitude of meanings to "the edge", and for many, edges are avoided as too much of a risk. Edge, in all matters, is a precipice of chance and potential change. Dodged, one loses out on new experiences, new lessons, and accumulative wisdom. Well done, John.

She Intrigues Me, Revelations Of Love by Jon Willey

If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
