-- Hopeless Yearning --

John Herlihy

Hopeless yearning spilled from a heart split open;

Unfulfilled desires rushed from a fragile organ broken.

Heart blood poured forth, love’s emotion laid waste;

An emptiness filled with nothing, not even haste.

A clinging despair now crept in, steeped in longing;

Left behind love’s ghost with its grim sense of belonging.

Yet abject loss brings with it a sense of fulfillment,

Offering sweet memories to soothe the bereavement.

Tears streamed forth as riverlets seeing purchase;

Mere drops in sorrow’s ocean never to settle for less.

The prospect of a dark, lonely winter now lay ahead;

Morning frost bound to branches of skeletal trees wed.

Yet the seasons never linger and eventually will pass;

Rebirth and spring rains will feelings of hope amass.

Dark days brighten in the hopeless yearning for hope,

A sense of promise, of potential, of fulfillment to evoke.

I think the title "Hopeless Yearning" is misleading, for the poem ends on a note of hope. But it describes perfectly the feelings we encounter when we lose that which we've invested so much of ourselves.

The inevitable closure of what was into what might be ahead. If only more would accept such a philosophy, our society would benefit greatly. Another noteworthy exploration into hope and trust. Thank you for posting.

A sadness felt within. Yearning for what perhaps will never be. The last two lines do show a glimmer of hope, however slight it may be. A keeper for sure.

Out of winter comes the spring? I had a little trouble with the meaning of this apparently seasonable piece of writing. It seems to jump from one perspective to another. But it's probably just me and my rather literal interpretation.

There is progression from start to end of this poem. Each extremity contrasting the other, lost and found. The visual of frost on bone trees is stunning, but my favorite line is: “An emptiness filled with nothing, not even haste.” Very expressive. ~~ djl
