-- Intertwining Poetic Similes --
John Herlihy
All the similes intertwine,
They all each other resemble.
Standing as verses that rhyme,
Artifacts of nature to assemble.
The blue hills roll away,
Like the waves in the sea.
Waves of the sea roll away,
Like those rolling blue hills.
Streaking rays of the sun shone,
Like rows of buttercups in a field.
Rows of buttercups in a field,
Like streaking rays of the sun.
Fragments of broken crystal,
Like designs of winter frost.
Intimate designs of winter frost,
Like fragments of broken crystal.
The fallen snow blanketed,
Like the smoothness of bone.
The smoothness of bone,
Like fallen snow blanketed.
Spring sunlight thru the window,
Like diamonds patterns on a wall.
Diamond patterns on the wall,
Like spring sunlight thru the window.
The range of my emotions,
Like the colors of stained glass.
The colors of stained glass,
Like the range of my emotions.
Hopes that have dried up,
Like an exhausted mountain spring.
An exhausted mountain spring,
Like hopes that have dried up.
The worries that plagued me vanished,
Like morning dew on summer grass.
Vanishing morning dew on summer grass,
Like the distant worries that once plagued me.
The sorrow nesting in my heart,
Like birds in naked trees of winter.
Birds in naked trees in winter,
Like sorrow nesting in my heart.
The joy of my fluttering heart,
Like the fanning wings of a sparrow.
The fanning wings of a sparrow,
Like joy in my fluttering heart.
The stately trees of the forest,
Like sea horses in the ocean deep.
Sea horses in the ocean deep,
Like stately trees in the forest.
The darkened clouds in the sky,
Like the gathering storm in my mind.
The gathering storm in my mind,
Like darkened clouds in the sky.
Random thoughts flit thru my mind,
Like wind gusts across the prairie.
Wind gusts across the prairie,
Like thoughts flitting thru my mind.
The dancers united in rhythms of life,
Like shadowy patterns of firelight.
Shadowy patterns of firelight,
Like dancers united in rhythms of life.
Intertwining similes that forever bind,
Like rope knots never to unfold.
Relationships that clarify in my mind,
As artifacts of nature wish to be told.
They arrive with the prairie dust,
Take their leave around the bend.
As poet, I scribble them down, I must,
Words on a page but spirit riding wind.
