-- Long Lost Friends --

John Herlihy

Throughout the course of a long life,

I have a multitude of friends known.

After much joy, hardship and strive,

All swept away, by the wind blown.

Many strangers turned firm friends,

During my life, close for some while.

Friends move on, the friendship ends,

Now simply forgotten, a heap in a pile.

Good night, Dolores, sweet dreams.

Goodbye Derrick, keep yourself well.

Hard to know what this passing means.

A mystery that no one can rightly tell.

Here today and then gone tomorrow,

Life captured in the blink of an eye.

We know life but a gift on borrow,

We will never know the day we die.

I too remembered and forgotten,

A friend once in another’s mind.

Live briefly, in another life begotten,

Treated with care by someone kind.

Better to be forgotten and to forget,

Each life lived and sometimes missed.

The living soul has no need for regret,

Touched by someone else as blessed.

THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF FRIENDS. SOME PEOPLE WE'VE KNOWN AND CALLED..FRIENDS...WE ARE GLAD THE ACQUAINTANCE CAME TO AN END. OTHERS...ARE MISSED AND THE FRIENDSHIP STILL LINGERS IN SPIRIT... EVEN THOUGH MILES AND YEARS SEPARATE. MY MOM ONCE TOLD ME...CONSIDER YOURSELF BLEST, IF YOU FIND ONE TRUE FRIEND. I HAVE FOUND HIM, AMEN. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

As a Navy brat growing up my friends came and went often. But there are a few that I am still friends with all these years later. They are rare treasures.

We have no need for regret only fondness and remembrances, especially at this time of year, Merry Christmas John :)

It is nice when you come across someone that was a friend long ago that you have lost touch with. But with age, as in my case, so many that I thought were friends are gone for good. So it's good to always keep making friends, and younger friends, because you never know when you need a friend.

And it's always nice to have a friend around during the holidays to help with good cheer. I will be here, hopefully to catch everyone in your poems throughout this few days left of the season until the new year.

Reading your poem jettisoned my mind back to a film I saw that strangely connects with your poem. "Deja Vu" directed by Henry Jaglom (available on Amazon Prime) The idea of friendship is a slippery slope to many people. Enjoyed this write. Thank you, John... and I wish you a Happy Holiday period. Your friendship is special.
