-- We May Never Know Our Place --
John Herlihy
We may never know our place,
The world wears a thankless face.
One moment in the here and now,
Then, oh yes then, gone somehow.
Does the flower know the bloom
Its petals there on ground strewn?
Do summer leaves know fall’s chill
When its burnished heart lies still?
Days of happiness wear a smile,
Behind the smile lies the frown.
Whatever we do ends up a pile,
Only after we die, then renown.
We claim that we live for today,
Placing our hopes in tomorrow.
In our choices come what may,
Living our lives as if on borrow.
Does time know the fleeting hour,
While it ticks along its merry way.
When in the past, gone it power,
Only the future will have its say.
We will never know our place,
Until we take our leave, gone.
Sweet memory shows its face,
And of us sings its lilting song.
