-- Our Secret Is Safe --
John Herlihy
We live our lives as if our secret is safe,
Do our business pretending to be a waif.
Yet we enter places we must never explore,
Self-serving wrongs that in others we abhor.
Everyone can see the mask worn on the face,
The depths of the heart reveal another place.
There lies hidden all the bad things that we do,
All the things we would never admit we knew.
We pretend to ourselves that nobody knows,
Others may suspect but they can only suppose.
Truth to tell, we are all rowing the same boat,
Our hearts seem protected by a secure moat.
We think we are alone, a myth that isn’t true ,
This a secret of ourselves that we always knew.
In the soul, an eye open that will never close,
In seeing all we do, the eye our secret knows.

While conservatives seem to be masters at covering up evil doings, perhaps more enlightened, progressive, and even liberal ideas will help those with dark secrets not be so afraid living with their secrets hanging over them nearly all their lives.
