-- Revelations of the Senses --

By John Herlihy

Revelations of the senses as bud awakening to flower,

As seconds fill the minutes, while minutes fill the hour.

Visions of the natural world in all its magnificent glory,

An unfolding narrative flowing in a never-ending story.

Musical notes fill the silence as dust notes fill the void,

Trailing light and hushed whispers in a passing asteroid.

Listen closely, if you wish to hear music of the spheres,

Mingling harmonies of starlight bring music to the ears.

A blessed intimacy found in the movements of a caress,

So velvety, a feeling of silk, longings of love to address.

Touched by the loved one, lifting the veil before the soul,

Sublime solitude drawn in the oneness of feeling whole.

Paradisical gardens experienced in the sense of smell,

Intoxicating a distracted mind with their mystical spell.

Frankincense, myrrh, nature’s perfume to overwhelm,

Lilacs, jasmine, forget-me-nots all standing at the helm.

Sweetness of nectar honeyed, bitterness of vinegar sour,

The sense of taste exercises over us its tantalizing power.

Does taste merely make us ravenous for things we miss,

Or does it take us by the hand to sit at the table of bliss?

What then do the budding flowers of the five senses reveal?

Outer senses flaunt the grace that the inner senses conceal.

Lift the diaphanous veil, of third eye, confront life’s mystery,

Awaken to the spirit of an alternative world in all its beauty.

Simply beautiful how you managed to weave the words together into this mystical world of senses.

This whole offering is about as sensual as one can get. However, I think the second stanza is a little bit too far out to actually be sensed. Perhaps just imagined.

A unique and colorfully imaged piece alive with spiritual metaphors. "So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." Enjoyed this, John. Thanks for sharing. r

A truly enchanting array of sensorial comparisons. I particularly liked this poem, John, as it branched out so far with its choice of visual focus. Well done.

Utterly Gorgeous! Makes me want to put this poem on like a beautiful gown. I love it* ~~ djl. P.S. — I’m not done raving yet……also…the flow of the lines, the unforced rhyme, the inclusion of all means of perception, visualizations, . . . stupendous. I’m stupified. This would make Emily Dickenson jealous. ~~ djl
