-- The Mystery of Things Happening --

By John Herlihy

How do things happen,

Many mysteries to be sure.

Things beyond our reckoning,

Open secrets in a heart pure.

In a kiss lies magical wonder,

Industrious bees do plunder.

Storm-filled sky’s thunder,

Tornadoes stir wind asunder.

Under the heavenly skies,

Humming wings of butterflies,

The glowing lanterns of fireflies,

Transparent delicacy of dragonflies.

On the tongue the miracle of taste,

Roasted almonds ground into paste,

The nakedness of empty plates,

The sweet innocence of the chaste.

How does the bud unfold into the flower?

How do the minutes fill time’s hour?

How does the river capture so much power?

How beautiful the tolling of bells in a tower?

How does the mountain reach such height?

How does the ocean wave disappear from sight?

How do falling feathers float so light?

How does the darkness define the night?

The world turns according to natural law,

More things happen than what I ever saw.

It used to be that there were gods controlling every little thing. But now we have scientific inquiry finding out new knowledge all the time. And the wonder of it is, the more we find out, the more we want to know.

But some mysteries may never be found out.

Even though some of the phenomena you relate to is explained by science, there is a quiet curiosity behind such facts that serve to bring the average reader to a moment of consideration: science can't explain it all. Enjoyed.
