-- Truth of Remembering and Forgetting --

by John Herlihy

Sometimes we remember.

Sometimes we forget.

Sometimes we forget to remember.

Rarely do we remember to forget.

Some things I want to remember.

Some things I want to forget.

Some things I don’t want to remember.

Some things I don’t want to forget.

There is a randomness to remembering.

There is a randomness to forgetting.

Why do I some things remember?

Why do I some things forget?

Some things we need to remember.

Some things we need to forget.

Somethings we remember forever.

Somethings we forget forever.

Bits and pieces I remember.

Most of my life I forget.

Treasured things we remember.

Lost the things we forget.

In remembering lies forgetting.

In forgetting lies remembering.

At the end of remembering, forgetting.

At the end of forgetting, remembering.

One thing always to remember,

In the heart as a burning ember.

One thing never to forget,

Held firmly with no regret.

Let me always remember,

To live in the present, now.

Always to remember, never to forget,

Alive, awake, aware, somehow.

Illusion worth forgetting,

Reality worth remembering.

Lies worth forgetting,

Truth worth remembering.

Let me truly forget,

Things with no potential.

Let me always remember,

The one thing essential.

The Truth, the Reality, the One,

God – of balance, harmony and light spun.

Profound tree image and great subject here for us elders, John. These lines have a playfulness in them and a kind of melody. I disagree with Ron about their repetition, I found the cadence enjoyable. I agree with Ron about writing things down and with selective memory is a kind of housecleaning, but here you have swept up plenty good material to use in these four-line stanzas. May very favorite is “Let me always remember,…..”. Those last four words are good beads for a mantra bracelet. Then this: {“why do I some things remember?”… the order of the words is the charm; it would have lost something had it been “why do I remember some things?”} Very fun reading :) ~~ djl

While I found it a bit repetitious, there's a lot of truth in what you wrote about how we tend to forget and how we tend to remember.

A memory is kind of like a muscle. If we don't use it, we tend to lose it. Makes me glad I wrote everything down before I forgot it when I was younger.

There resides in all of us the many elements of the memory-conundrum, but given the nature of our brains being sponges for our experience and no others, there's probably a council of synapses that confer in their tangled way and make the decisions for us. Yes, remembering and forgetting is all part of life's housecleaning job. Interesting compilation of choices.

You are seemingly referring here to one of Allah's 99 (?) names - "Al-Haqq' - (the truth, the reality, the one.) Christ Jesus says in John 14:6: "I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me." For any earnest Truth seeker, this begs the question: Is the Bible or the Quran the true word of God? Lovely poetic words John, that once again present a conundrum. Thank you for sharing. r
