-- What Still Remains --

by John Herlihy

What is it that still remains,

When everything else is gone.

Left behind that still pertains,

After the last breath is drawn.

Whispered echoes still reverberate,

As I make my final journey home.

One enduring message to enervate,

Under the awning of heaven’s dome.

All questions have been laid aside,

Nothing left to ask in the running.

One final emotion in which to abide,

One final answer still forth-coming.

All hopes and dreams now fade,

Mountain mist drifts with no sound.

Into the unknown mystery to wade,

Left to hear – a silence profound.

What is it that still remains,

When everything else is gone.

Left behind that still pertains,

After the last breath is drawn.

Love lived as dream in the best of times,

A lifetime of yearning for what it seems.

Love lived as salvation in the worst of times,

A lifetime of learning to know what it means.

"when everything else is gone" only the future remains. Accept then what is, and let go of what was. Honestly: when you truly grasp that real knowledge is knowing the extent of your ignorance, then you’ve been blessed with a life-changing revelation. 'A lifetime of learning' has clearly revealed to me how very little I really know. You reveal much of yourself in these 6 strophes. Thank you for sharing. r

Unfortunately, few seriously know what love is, looking for and finding but infatuation for the obvious... human partnership. To be prepared in the full pleasure of "what remains" one has to also allow the multitude of opportunities from Nature and one's inner-self to supply a true sense of love. Appreciate your thoughts.

I sense a sense of longing… Of something unfulfilled as you make this last journey. A lot of emotion in this poem.
