-- Loud Thoughts --

By John Herlihy

Sometimes our thoughts are so loud,

We cannot even hear ourselves think.

A feeling of being alone in a big crowd,

Seeing without realizing that we blink.

Loud thoughts are never enough,

Their echoes also fade in the wind.

They are not made of the right stuff,

On the breast of incertitude pinned

Loud thoughts try to have their say,

So loud that they cannot be heard.

The tweeting of birds more convey,

Amplified thoughts as vision blurred.

Thoughts as loneliness crying for help,

Shouting in a crowd yet so very alone.

The quiet of solitude arriving by stealth,

Shapely and beautiful, as quiet as stone.

Loud thoughts listened to but not heard,

No virtue lies in the force of insistence.

Power lies in the quiet thought of a word,

Listened to by virtue of their persistence.

GOD SPEAKS SOFTLY, BUT THEN...SOMETIMES LOUD. AS WE, 'HIS' SHEEP, WALK WITH HIM FROM DAY TO DAY WE GROW ACCUSTOMED TO THE DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES OF 'HIS' VOICE...AMEN. ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I am currently recovering from a months long bout of bipolar mania that was very effectively hidden by a host of medical problems, including sensitivity to anesthesia and medications. During that time, as happens during any period of mania, my thoughts tumble and race through my mind so fast they're like a psychic blur and I can't fully catch them. And yet, they make a loud "noise" that can make it difficult to separate the rational ones from the less than rational ones. Loud thoughts, indeed.

Thankfully, until 2023, my manic episodes were rare and short-lived. This last was a true anomaly I wouldn't wish on an enemy.

I think in the last decade, loudness has created different avenues of meaning. For me, much of the written word is pure unadulterated noise. My work with Blackstone has allowed many lessons in what not to write. Of course the old versions of noise prevail. After all, noise is noise, but I hope expressions will someday soon quiet down and realize life is not in need of loud nothingness being foisted on us all.

The only loud thoughts I get are "you have to pee!" But I would suppose people who anger easily would get loud thoughts. I am slow to anger, and if an angry thought comes to mind is generally a slow burn.

I find that quiet solitude arrives more like a rippling brook rather than stealthy stone..

I've struggled at times with loud thoughts in my life.... Still do. There is always something vying for your attention, and a lot of it does not have your best intentions at heart. Our life always expresses the result of our dominant thoughts. Or as scripture confirms: 'out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.' Amen. For he who loves God without faith reflects on himself, while the person who loves God in faith reflects on God. Thank you for sharing this thoughtful insight. r.

Next Arrivals by Robin Ouzman Hislop

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
