-- The Ordinary Hour --

John Herlihy

There was a time when I scorned the ordinary hour,

The passing of all those dreary days, no real power.

Where are the big moments, life-changing schemes,

Such things that happen to tell us what life means.

Clouds gather, the sun disappears, it begins to rain,

We think we are happy until we begin to feel the pain.

When the clock strikes nine or ten, we say so what,

Such monotony in the routine we want to cry out but.

People go on their business doing what they please,

They make everything seem important, at their ease.

In my old age, I now treasure ordinary hours of days,

I take comfort in my peaceful routine and quiet ways.

There to settle back quietly into the ordinary hour,

To trust, to rest assured, of its unique, special power.

I HEARTILY AGREE, JOHN! IN THESE DAYS WHERE EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE CHANGING MORE RAPIDLY THEN ONE CAN GRASP...THE BLESSING OF EXPERIENCING AN 'ORDINARY HOUR' IS AN UNIQUE TREASURE. IT COULD BE 'AGE'...OR...THE AGE WE ARE IN. ENJOYED, THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Now with the world at my fingertips, every hour is filled with something new and exciting are awful. I hardly have time to write, experiencing it all. But a lot is said for occasionally just relaxing and having an ordinary hour without interruption or even contemplation of something that needs to be done or experienced.

I relate to this poem in so many ways. It is grande. Your choice in line treatment is part of the uniqueness of these textual images. Best one in my eyes is line 8, ending with “…but.”. The period after ‘but’ was perfect, John. Especially resonating for me is “They make everything seem important,….”. I feel the heft of that concept. The rush-a-thon of all ‘perpetual doing’ can feel to elders as frantic madness so urgent there’s no time to look up. “There to settle back quietly into the ordinary hour.” . . . . . I felt myself leaning back into my soft pillows as I read this at 9:26 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Thank you for this ~~ djl
