-- Where Does Love Come From -- by John Herlihy Where does love come from, From the head, the feet, the fingers? Where love’s song sweetly sung, From the fragrant perfume that lingers? Does love come from the eyes, Or is it love’s radiance that shines thru. Offerings only the lovers can devise, Gifts only the two lovers can brew. Does love comes from the mind, Where reason and logic reside. Love sees when the mind is blind, Out in the open with nothing to hide. Does love come as a result of reason Where is reason in love’s intimate embrace The breath of love at home in any season Revealing the multiple sides of its face Indeed, does love come from the face, Etched in the shape of each wrinkle and line? Love’s light found in its every trace, What seems as earthly mimics the divine Does love come from the hand Fingers as feathers upon the surface of skin From head to foot love’s caress spanned Love’s message on the heart to pin Does love come from the heart, A cave where life’s deepest emotions spring? A visionary impulse to break worlds apart, Never forget the pain and power of love’s sting. Does love spring from the ground of the soul, A fragile seedling adding flame to spark? Weaving a story from the braille of life’s scroll, Listen to the intimacy of echoes and whispers – hark. Wherever love comes from, I now know so much more, Such yearning flows ever onward as a wave in the sea. Once again, you have covered almost every nuance of love there is. But I find love to be a mysterious longing all of us. If unfulfilled or treated badly, it can easily turn to hate.

Psychologists have defined love of three different kinds. I believe you have covered them all in your poem. They are important for our well-being and we must exercise them to keep them vibrant.

Regardless of where love comes from, we must nurture it and always try to make it work for us so that we don't become hateful and just the opposite of loving.

Love doesn't come "from" anywhere. It just is. It can flourish, it can weaken, it can go dormant. It can do and be many things. But it has always been, and always will be.

I'm but one person, but one that has experienced many of the anecdotal images you've created here. I would add that I, like many others, have found the love of another human has evolved into a rather risky journey. Far too many take the emotion of love and attach it only to human-to-human love. That's still a reward when it can be trusted to move as your last stanza depicts. But... love can know many other directions, e.g., many forms of Nature, many forms of man, beast and insect accomplishments that result in some means of improving our lives. This stanza says much to me: Does love come as a result of reason

The breath of love at home in any season

Revealing the multiple sides of its face
