-- Not as a Stranger --
by John Herlihy
Since we all must perish,
Let us perish a thousand times.
Every minute and hour cherish,
Life's poem as a thousand rhymes.
And if death not a thought to relish,
Let it not be I but death that pines.
To face reality and not be churlish,
To conquer death by dying many times.
Not as a stranger, to die before we die,
Death understood as an awaited friend.
Some days we smile, while others we cry,
Life brief and death swift, let's not pretend.
On implicit trust and divine mercy to rely,
As we the back side of the mountain descend.
A reason to go on living and a way to comply,
Only to discover a beginning lying in the end.
