-- Starless Night --

by John Herlihy

A starless night is such an eerie thing,

A coal black horse with its breath missing.

Only boundless depths of the blackened night,

Without the mystery of the stars burning bright.

Gazing into the darkness takes the breath away,

The blindness of an eye with nothing at all to say.

As if the night sky has been robbed of its mystery,

These votive candles of night bereft of all beauty.

Never looked into the heart of the night before,

Never more such precious gems on nature’s shore.

Night has been stripped of all its artifacts, naked,

As if the darkness of night now fully awakened.

Even the silence of the night an uninvited guest,

Not a whisper or cry spoken in earnest or jest.

A haunting moon rises over the earth’s shoulder,

Making the starless night seem much less older.

I can't imagine a starless night unless it's due to cloud cover. When I lived in the Aleutians I found it curious how during the day there was thick cloud cover but at night it was usually clear as a bell. The only other time I would see that many stars again was when I lived in Yellowstone many years later.

Your words remind me of such a night I drove a convertible across the New Mexico deserts and gazed up at such a sight. I was struck by the kind of opacity such a starless/moonless night shares with us from time to time. You've given an appropriate poetic spin to this relatively rare bit of science that projects such a nothingness. Well done.

An interesting contemplation. But it's very hard to lose all the stars except in the imagination because there is no physical way to prevent them from shining through except with deep clouds.

I liked the last two lines.
