-- Silence --

by John Herlihy

Under the velvet night sky

Stars as diamond dust overhead

Breath of the waning moon descends

On its way towards the horizon

The cascading geyser of Northern Lights

Hitting the waves of the pond

Did you hear that, I asked

She looked at me startled

Then replied, some night birds?

No, I said, silence

Hard to get used to

Still hard sometimes

As in the tornado in the mind

Silence in the heart of the storm

That’s why I would like to fly

In the quiet and stillness of the sky

How about that, such silence

Nothing else would I let in

This beautiful poem takes me back to one of my first mornings in Yellowstone. Since I worked the midnight shift as a registration clerk at Grant Village, watching sunrises over Lake Yellowstone was a real perk! But one of the first I witnessed remains so clear in my memory that it might have happened just this morning rather than 30 years ago. I likened it to a visual equivalent of one of Bach's most intense chords. But it was totally silent. Even the birds were silent. And my mind absolutely could not fathom that such beautiful drama would make no sound. It was simply one of the most, if not THE most, awesome experience in my life.

Silence in one form or another is a favorite subject of yours and here you've penned a very personal take on the subject. Yes, to be able to "...fly in the quiet and stillness of the sky..." would be a welcome relief for many of us. I could use a trip like that as the world's problems and complex personalities making news and documentaries leave me quite frustrated, so I write about a lot of dilemmas and those thorny complexities. Sign me up when you are ready to fly.
