-- Whenever We Cry Alone --

by John Herlihy

Whenever we cry alone,

Does anyone ever care

Cracked my heart of stone

Does anyone my feeling spare

Melancholy music for sad nights,

Words whispered in sotto voce.

Notes on a piano filled with light,

Tears of sadness as a cry andante.

When the bell tolls the hour,

I sit up, take notice and listen.

Echoes resounding with power,

As stars in the darkness glisten.

When on the brink of despair,

Wrapped in a veil of melancholy.

Then a sad soul utters its prayer,

Into the stillness of night’s mystery.

Whenever we cry alone,

Does anyone ever take notice?

Stripped down to the bare bone,

As withered petals of the lotus.

Even with others, left alone to cry,

The voice whispers, the tears flow.

Others listen and stare, then sigh,

You draw in so they won’t know.

There at the bottom of the abyss,

The only place left but to arise.

Touch by hope as in a loving kiss,

And lifted aloft unto infinite skies.

All thru life we be forever harried,

Time arrives on time, we ever late.

Even if the heart finally be buried,

Yet the bereaved still feels its ache.

I only cry when I am alone,

From raw emotion people flee.

No *one notices a rolling stone,

Still silent, on my own, only me.

Stanza #5 is a graceful ache, lotus petals withering. And the concept of ‘drawing in’ so others won’t know - that carries a tremendous shrinking, like using a sweatshirt hood under which to hide, even though the drawing in indicates stuffing feelings. Unique subject, this one. ~~ djl

MY TEARS ARE BETWEEN ME AND GOD...FOR NO ONE CAN COMFORT AND STRENGTHEN LIKE HE CAN. NO ONE CAN SEE THE ROOT OF THE CAUSE AND TEND TO IT...LIKE HE CAN. I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO OPEN MY MOUTH...HE KNOWS WHY I AM CRYING AND HE CARES AND ...'HE CATHES MY TEARS, IN HIS BOTTLE'...AMEN. SO, WHENEVER I CRY, I AM NOT CRYING ALONE...GOD HE IS NEAR. I LOVE THIS SHARING, JOHN...THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You have some questions about tears that most people don't think of. To me it's that we can have both tears of sorrow and joy… and the third of eye irritation. I've experienced those emotions when viewed by others to be misunderstood.

But tears can certainly relieve us of great anguish or sorrow in our minds like a good shower relaxes our bodies.

A poignant insight worth contemplating. Tears of joy. Tears of grief. Angry tears. Idle tears that have no obvious meaning. Then there's the tears that come from the depths of a divine despair that rises up in the heart and draws us closer to the One who knows us far better than we know ourselves. The One who loves us more than we could ever imagine. Enjoyed this. Peace. r

Yes, weeping is for private, solitary environments. I have found over the years--in both myself and others--that a good cry is healing and usually has a lesson as a bonus. Thanks for posting.
