What do we need to do to be worthy of true happiness?

I speak not of the fleeting happiness that has no finesse.

True happiness that reaches down into the depths of soul,

Not a happiness that we from some random whim stole.

Ask any person how they may intend happiness to achieve,

Some real happiness into the fabric of their lives to weave.

True happiness eludes us, we don’t really know what it is;

Like the tides it ebbs and flow, wavelets of froth and fizz.

What of the inner happiness as precursor to lasting peace,

To fill us with the waters of its satisfaction without cease.

The alternative to awaken mornings with feelings of dread,

To lose any sense of enduring happiness as our lot instead.

Happy those who seek not delight in the cave of the heart;

Happy the even-tempered, the merciful, the pure of heart.

Not the evil actions that our sense of well-being destroy,

Actions that are virtuous and fill our souls with inner joy.
