An Old Solace

By John Herlihy

An old solace endures;

A lost courage that cures.

Like an old tree in the ground,

The roots reach deep down.

Not all the way dark yet;

Twilight has not fully set.

All the light left in the day,

Still has a quiet word to say.

Life often brings us to the edge;

Some lingering hope to allege.

The day is not always for weeping;

The night is not always for sleeping.

I lay down tallying the effort of my day

What did I produce and what did I pay.

I am not one to boast of this or that,

Nor do I have an attitude of tit-for-tat.

I wrap the day up into a simple package,

A gift left over from the day’s wreckage.

To rely on myself, not on any other one.

For some, only a cold solace life assures;

For me, an old solace that simply endures,

AN OLD SOLACE HAS BEEN SHAPED OVER TIME...CHISLED AND ROUGHENED BY LIFE'S TINES. AND AS YOUR LAST LINE SO ELOQUENTLY AND PERFECTLY IMPLIES; IT SIMPLY, BY THE WILL OF GOD, ENDURES. SO GOOD, JOHN, SO VERY GOOD! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Right on, John. I envy anyone who can sort, file away, and move on. I can't do it, but I still believe in it.

A very positive way to look at one's life as we age and are still alone, dependent only on our own resources, and not on others.

Seems like an appropriate premise for a day like today. Whether one is celebrating Fatherdom or wishing there was a father in any category that would converse honestly, you have shown in this exploration of self and the company the self keeps in such a way as to make us all check our scoreboard on Solace points. Some contemplation is in order after reading this, John. Well done.
