Tolling of a Bell

by John Herlihy

The tolling of a bell is a mysterious affair,

Tantamount to being the whisper of a prayer.

Evocative of ancient memory of the world born,

Whispers of love and life out of eternity torn.

Rhythms of a metronome sounding as a drum,

Reverberating thru the church as sacred hum.

A complement to the silence of a church nave,

The pungent aroma of incense floats as a wave.

The bell echoes base notes of primitive harmonies,

Arousing within the heart cave touching sympathies.

Sounding of the gong represents the passing hour,

The solemn dirge as expressive as a beauteous flower.

Reminiscent of sacred things as forgiveness and mercy,

Therein lies the mystery of its resounding beauty.

YES, THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT IT. WITHOUT QUESTION, THERE IS A BEAUTY IN A BELL'S TOLLING. IT STIRS UP MANY DIFFERENT FEELINGS AND MEMORIES...PAST. GREAT SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

A gong or a bell could reach the citizenry of a town far better than a town crier. It could also announce the hour, the coming of a meeting or special event, and even play music. Whether it be in a church or not, bells were always part of a town's way of communicating until modern electronic communication came along.

For whom does the bell toll? An often considered thought for many. Your poem is a reader-friendly suggestion of the many influences of a tolling bell. I appreciated the magnitude of your exploration, as many have but a singular sense of its existence. Thank you for posting this informative and thought-provoking piece of poetry.
