The Accounting and the Scale

John Herlihy

Many a day will come and so too many a day will go.

When the day of accounting arrives, then we will know.

Not with what we have, for in truth we will have nothing.

Only what we have done will amount to something.

Although our intentions may have now ended,

What they set in motion will have our scale upended.

Our scale will stand ready our deeds to weigh.

Good and bad deeds, all with something to say.

A life lived for good will be measured in the balance;

A life lived for evil will be measured in the imbalance.

Those there will be who will claim they didn’t know;

Those there will be who claim nothing, their hearts glow.

One side upended in lies, treachery and petty fears;

The other loaded with charity, endurance and patient tears.

Be aware of the final accounting and its sensitive scale.

We will say nothing, the scale everything, what a tale.

ONE THING WE NEVER NEED FEAR, FOR...'HIS' SCALE IS HONEST AND FAIR! PRAISE GOD FOR HIS METICULOUS ACCOUNTING AND SCALE THAT JUDGES WITH THE WEIGHT OF HIS 'MERCY AND GRACE', WHICH SEES EVERYTHING, AMEN. A FINE IMPARTING, ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Most of the great religions that people follow want their followers to believe that the accounting will come upon their earthly death before they enter their chosen spiritual realm. Good or bad, according to your poem.

Not believing any of that nonsense, when I die, there will be no superior authority accounting for my accomplishments or behavior. Only my family and friends, historians and archaeologist if I've taken part in something larger than a simple ordinary life that has garnered attention of people in the future. Simply, something historical.

It is only those who dig up what is left of us, either what is physical or what is on the Internet that will count to future generations, AI searchers, etc.

Why I encourage everyone who creates art, music and writing to put as much as possible of it on the Internet where it will be found before any physical evidence will ever turn up.

The scale as a metephore applicatble to anyone's belief system works well in the definitive analogy of what living is mainly about. Perhaps the saddest impact this finely crafted poem has on me is that in today's world, we are dominated by the negative half of the scale, and it continues to grow. A narcasistic population coninues to influence more and more. Children today are severely handifcapped in their learning and experience activity by so much negativety dominating all realms of communication. If only more would read yoru work and take much of it to heart, we would have a healthier world. Thanks for posting.
