Things in the Future and Past by John Herlihy Some things there in the future, Just waiting to make their way. Some things arrive in the present, More than ready to have their say. All things take leave into the past, Moments live briefly in the present. Nothing in the present will ever last, Their brief life considered a present. Some past things still in the present, Between two worlds wishing to linger. Their memory still alive in the present, The beating pulse touched by a finger. Some things in the future never arrive There in the future where hopes thrive Some things in the past forever gone, With no way of resurrecting their song. - - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Wednesday 23`April 2025

As you so often present, the different ways to address time have always been an intriguing subject for me, and obviously, for you. This piece of wordplay is especially pertinent to me as I spend much more time in my senior years ruminating over the past, asking myself what impact it is having on my present day, and that enigmatic and unanswerable future. Your last few lines struck me with a different kind of identity: that of my nocturnal dreams, where much of my past reality comes to visit, knowing such visitation doesn't happen during waking hours. Another keeper, John.
