The Overarching Sky Above

by John Herlihy

The overarching sky above serves as man's best friend,

Most faithful friend our beloved universe could ever lend.

The sky reveals what even the best friend will never tell,

Its messages reverberate over the land as resounding bell.

The sky watches over all of humanity with a clear reason,

As mysteries are revealed with the passing of each season.

Every lesson we need to know just waiting patiently up there,

Deep in that boneless sky that we gaze upon and simply stare.

All we have to do is look up into the heavens and wonder,

Listen to the peeling organ chords and it's resounding thunder.

To witness sun rising and setting in rainbows of miraculous light,

Thru all the majesty of the day and all the mystery of the night.

Yes, we thank the heavens for the proclamations of the day,

But what of all the proclamations that beloved nights convey.

Gaze up into the night sky resplendent with a multitude of stars,

Countless galaxies swirling in motion as if contained within jars.

How lonely we would be without these miracles of light,

Sparkling in the far distance enhancing the mystery of night.

Revealing the boundlessness of the universe and its infinity,

The measure of time as nothing in the endlessness of eternity.

Forget not the moon’s appearance and its shimmering glow,

Bestowing upon all the artifacts of nature a simple halo.

The message of its phases is that nothing stays the same,

The universe a changing wonderland God's divinity to proclaim.

Under bright sky, the oceans, the mountains, the forests, the trees,

My head is bowed down in reverence as I kneel upon my knees.

THERE IS PURPOSE IN ALL HIS CREATION! ANY TIME I LOOK AT THE SKY....I SEE THE IMPOSSIBLE! MY HOPE AND FAITH IS LIFTED AND I CAN 'FEEL HIM'...OF WHOM NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. HE ...SO HIGH...BRINGS US HUMBLE AND LOW...AS HIS LOVE FLOWS TO US. AMEN. ENJOYED, SO INSPIRING, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

There is a plethora of homage coming through on these lines of yours, John. You have captured the connection humans have with the sky and all its offerings that take us into the realm beyond our earth life. Using the word ‘boneless’ for the mercurial nature of day and night sky is unique. Words ‘sparkling’ and ‘eternity’ being the message-givers is also effective. You tap into our reverence for the expansive ‘out there,’ and that feels like a positivity to me. Thank you* ~~ djl

With this poem you give a lot of credit to the sky when it is really the atmosphere that gives us what we see during the light of the sun. A phenomenon that gives us both the blue color and the white clouds from floating temporary ice crystals at various levels of the atmosphere.

If the clouds remain, they obscure the sky at night. But when they don't, the blue façade of day is gone and we see billions of miles into the past at light that has been coming to us from the stars for millennia untold.

Really remarkable and poetic when you think about it.

Ron
