There’s Something about a Banjo

by John Herlihy

There’s something about a banjo,

More playful than the stately piano.

More country than the strumming guitar,

Singing of mysteries found in many a star.

Naked as the day not wearing a stitch,

Those twanging cords never loose pitch.

Nothing can prevent the soul from escaping,

Escaping from the banjo as if awakening.

The rhythmic stroking of the strings caressed,

The adept hand doing the stroking as if blessed.

In playing, the banjo sends forth its unique voice,

In the day of living, the day of dying, rejoice.

Out of the instrument flows miseries and sorrows,

From the pores of wood sings joys of tomorrows.

Inevitably in the life there comes upon us a day,

A day when in the depths of hearts nothing to say.

We brought nothing to this life, carry nothing out,

Blessing found in between, a smile, a cry, a shout.

Need to be get along, since we are losing daylight,

Before we know it, we be heading into the night.

On strings of my heart, I hear a banjo strummin’,

On my tongue, my lips, the song of life hummin’.

For one brief moment, the human soul may soar,

On the wings of banjo music, the Lord to adore.

TO BE PERFECTLY HONEST...I'VE PAID LITTLE ATTENTION TO THE SOUND OF A BANJO, AND IF I HAD TO PICK A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT IT WOULD PROBABLY BE THE PIANO. BUT I ENJOYED THIS SHARING VERY MUCH AND LIKED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT; FORM, STYLE AND RHYME SEQUENCE IS JUST GREAT. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

A vivid reminder of what to younguns might seem ancient, but appreciation is still around for a reason, and you've given it new life. For me, I often swing between appreciation for the cello and the harmonica. Don't know why. Perhaps, as you so pointedly state in your poem, "...miseries and sorrows..." are made uncommon when a banjo accompanies them. I find those qualities of life's formula with the cello and harmonica as well. Good vibes here, John.

Hello John! This is a lively piece of music language. First of all, I really like the image of that banjo player. Second of all, your title is alluring. Third, you infused this with vivid lines. My favorite are: “In the day of living, the day of dying, rejoice.”. and “Out of the instrument flows miseries and sorrows.” and “On my tongue, my lips, the song of life hummin’.” Enjoyed this* ~~ djl

What a fun poem! I live in East Tennessee, part of the Appalachians. Banjos are an integral part of the musical culture here. It wouldn't be bluegrass with them!

Made me think of Dueling Banjos from the movie, Deliverance.

Where have all the old banjo players gone? Off to heaven, everyone?
