How Time Flies

by John Herlihy

My, how time flies,

Right before our eyes.

I turned ten, I turned eleven,

Soon enough, I was thirty-seven.

When I looked in the mirror,

Such speed, such terror.

How to slow it down,

My smile now a frown.

How many years spent,

How much time easily lent.

Lent they were these fleeting hours,

Oh so brief, these fading flowers.

I turned sixty, then seventy-eight,

The heft of years held such weight.

I turned eighty, then ninety-nine,

With one last hill that I must climb.

When will this book finally close,

Soon enough, but nobody knows.

And when the sewing finally done,

This life tapestry will be fully spun.

OH HOW VERY TRUE, JOHN!!! SEEMS LIKE I WAS JUST TWENTY...THE OTHER DAY. SO MUCH NOT DONE, BUT THEN...WHAT'S REALLY GOING TO MATTER IN THE END? IN THAT GREAT BY' AND BY' THE EARTHLY ALCOLLADES OF 'WHO WE ARE' WON'T MATTER, SO...WHAT WILL MATTER? 'WHOSE WE ARE'. AMEN. THORUGHLY ENJOYED! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

But... it's only time in this universe. Wait til we get to the alternate experience. Who knows? Let's hope that time is of a different scale so as to not watch it pass with concern, but watch it pass knowing there's still more, and more etc. I don't know, nor does anybody else, just waht happens when our clock stops, but I day after day wonder why time is passing, life is supposedly getting shorter for us, but life continually surprises me with epiphonies that seem to often rub out the old way of thinking and being. Anyway, as your poem cites so accurately, there is still work to be done on that tapestry of yours that maps out an incredible life. Give it a hug.

We have only so many minutes… so many heartbeats… until our hearts beat no more. Beautifully rendered in this concern about how fast we run through our life treasures until they are all gone and we missed the best.

I thought of an alternative last two lines…

And when the sowing finally done,

The harvest of our life is finally won.

So very true! I'll be 64 in June and I still feel like I should be 30 years younger. Have you ever noticed how the days can feel like they've dragged past but then you look back you find yourself wondering where the time went?
