The Next One by John Herlihy There’s always a next one The next day, the next hour The next chance, some luck won The next rainstorm, the next shower The next journey that will get us there The next step that will bring us home The next challenge, the next prayer The next question under heaven’s dome We never truly know what will come next Destiny written letter by letter on a scroll Around every corner a challenge, a test Things happen that are out of our control Time knows what’s next: the minute, the hour The bud knows what’s next: a beautiful flower - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Monday 17 November 2025

I LIKE THIS WORK, MY FRIEND. HOWEVER...I CANNOT AGREE WITH; 'TIME KNOWS WHAT'S NEXT'. JUST LIKE THE REST OF US...TIME HAS NO IDEA WHAT'S NEXT...FOR IT KNOWS NOT WHEN IT WILL END. REMEMBER...IN THAT ETERNAL PLACE...'TIME' WILL BE NON-EXISTENT. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Life's mysteries are fertile ground for poems, and this is a giant step in that direction. Nice artificial flower, but a real one blends in better I think.

This reads like a pre-cursor for the "Eternity" piece. The poem champions the idea that "what's next" is a positive driving force I know I use, and probably many others do as well. Your poems of late have offered one question after another relative to this poem. Well done, John.

I get the feeling from your poem that if we don't do the next one, we are dead. Isn't life doing the next one?

I'm currently getting so much information on what is next, that I can only participate in a very small portion of them, like reading your poems and commenting. But lately, I find myself so involved doing the next thing that I missed a major thing on my calendar. Probably just a sign of getting older.
