This Is What It Means

by John Herlihy

This is what it means to be an infant:

The days are as long as a year.

This is what it means to be a child:

They want days to be longer than they are.

This is what it means to be an adolescent:

They want days to be shorter than they are.

This is what it means to be young:

The days are short, but the years are long.

This is what it means to be middle-aged:

The days are long and the years run along.

This is what it means to be old:

The days are long, but the years are short.

This is what it means to be elderly:

The days are short and the end is near.

This is what it means to die:

Minutes or hours gone, a few seconds left.

This is what it means after death:

An ageless journey into the beyond.

"An ageless joureny into the beyond" wraps up this word journey that we often overlook... short, long, and the space some of find ourselves in as we age: keeping a purpose allows the days to be blissful and rewarding... void of short or long. Good stuff here, John.

They say we have only so many minutes or heartbeats in our heart. And we should use them all.

Your poem is more of the perception of time rather than the actual passage. As I age, I find that sometimes during the day that whole chunks of time disappear when I wake up From an impromptu snooze. from staying up too late and getting up too early every day for someone of my age.
