Moonstruck

by John Herlihy

A silver maiden riding high in the clouds,

Playing a seductive tune on violin strings.

The beloved moon wrapped in shrouds,

Gliding thru the darkness on shadowy wings.

Set in the earth’s rotation but never turns,

Moving in silence, the colossus never heard.

When gazing at the heavens, the heart yearns,

Touched by nature’s wonder, bereft of any word.

The appearance of the moon leaves us breathless,

Waxing and waning over time with multiple faces.

Nightly over the horizon as we stare speechless,

Harmony found deep in space by the moon’s graces.

Governing cycles of fertility, tides and human moods,

Afflicting people with madness as the moon broods.

Madly in love combining lunacy with loving romance,

Leaving the moonstruck adrift within a mystical trance.

Moonstruck by the magic of love’s mysterious obsession,

Dreamy passion and enchantment woven into lunar longing.

Capturing the irrational nature of love’s consuming passion,

Blending awe and wonder into a sense of spiritual belonging.

A FINE SHARING, JOHN. INDEED, IF WE'RE OPEN TO IT...GOD'S NIGHT ORB HAS A WAY OF LIFTING OUR SENSES TO HIGHER PLACES WHERE WE CAN GRAB AND ABSORB...ALL WE NEED TO GO THROUGH THIS WORLD WITH THE HOPE AND PEACE OF ENCOURAGED HEARTS. I'VE PERSONALLY BEEN THERE...IN A HOMELESS SHELTER, EVERY NIGHT THE GLOW OF THE MOON ON THE CROSS-SHAPED WINDOWPANE...GAVE ME HOPE. WONDERFUL, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

As always your imagery is moving and lyrical.

Another heartfelt praise of "love' in its broadest sense. We often find symbols of love and place our trust and confidence in such identities. It seems that often the loosing entities are the humans, the flesh and blood. partners we often dedicate ourselves to. As your poem notes, there are many ways to express and find love, and those who take up the challenge are the ones who live the longest and realize that the essence of love need not be flesh. Great work.

You clearly point out how the moon has shaped us during our evolution. To me it's a warm friend that allows me to see better in the dark. To others it's a signal to howl.

I doubt if we would be here without the moon.
