I Hope by John Herlihy I hope as one enduring hope When it is time to take leave I can do so quickly and quietly Without making too much fuss In silence and in solitude My true abiding friends A long life seems short A quick death long in coming Until it is suddenly there There no longer Gone with the tide To another shore To a place far distant In a boat with no oar - - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Thursday 5 February 2026

HMMM. I WOULD SAY THAT MANY OF US 'HOPE' THE SAME THING. BUT, REALLY IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW WE SHOULD LEAVE THIS PLACE...BUT ONLY THAT WHEN WE OPEN OUR EYES...WE SEE 'HIS' BLESSED FACE. AMEN. SHORT AND QUITE SWEET, MY FRIEND, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

I would like a gentle breeze, the essence of flowers nearby, and soft music that lets me drift along with it all. Sweet voices in the background would be a plus. Then, no sense of darkness, but a new presence that holds me in awe.

A thought most of us have when we reach a certain age and begin to see the inevitable. I like the image and idea of a boat without oars.

But aren't you a bit premature? At least 20 years left?

As I read this one of my favorite instrumental pieces began playing in the stereo. "Setting Sail on Far Horizon." Very appropriate merging of two beautiful works.

Only two men have escaped death in the history of the world, with perhaps the possibility of a third. Enoch and Elijah, and, if there were any records to prove or disprove it, the mysterious Melchizedek. 'Quickly and quietly', I agree John. The saddest thing though, is all that dies within us while we live. A somber piece. r
