The Mystery and Majesty of Twilight

by John Herlihy

 

In dusk the mystery and majesty of twilight,

Who on earth could ever imagine or reckon.

The departure of day and the coming of night,

Distant stars awaken to darkness and beckon.

 

The hour ethereal as the sky witnesses change,

From sky blue to regal purple to scarlet blush.

As if the hem of the earth must itself rearrange,

The dying day now breathes forth a quiet hush.

 

From minarets echo the beloved call to prayer,

The faithful enter the mosque with heads bowed.

A veil of contentment and peace their faces wear,

As the limp body of the day wrapped in a shroud.

 

One brief moment as the world dies a little death,

A celestial moment to breathe out tongues of fire.

The day finally expires issuing forth its final breath,

While the orbiting earth puts on its nocturnal attire.

Twilight ... a special time of day both in the city and in the country.

The hush ...

The Platters turned "Twilight Time" into one of the biggest hits of the 1950s. Were you one of them? It's a great time of day to relax with a glass of Riesling, and just feel the night coming on. Nicely done.

The beauty of the gloaming certainly lends itself to poetic expression. Moments that feel both fleeting and eternal, moments that whisper secrets to those who take the time to stop and watch. The poets exposition on twilight honors the beauty of transition, and the sacredness of being in-between. Beautifully imaged John. Well done. rlc

Bringing day, dusk and night to life, a breathing, moving into the day's recharge mode is no easy feat to dramatize, but you did it here. Well done, John. A definite piece to read at day's end.
