 Passing of the Hours

by John Herlihy

In the balance of time
The night ends - the day begins

As seconds grow into minutes
The light of dawn makes itself known

As dawn light grows stronger
Day crawls over the lip of the horizon

As the minutes take on speed
The hours begin to slow down

As the hours grow short
The gathering days grow long

As the days grow endless
The months take on the aura of promise

As the months grow into years
The years begin to accumulate

As the years grow into decades
The decades take on the aura of loss

As the sands of time flow faster
The river of time flows slower

In the sounding of time’s metronome
Destiny as a lock without a key

As time itself meets its end
The door of eternity reveals its ray of light

The closing of death’s door
The opening of the sun door

Light upon light upon light
Forged from the darkness of night

The earth rotation does not change very much in our brief lifetime, making that ticking of time quite precise. But if we spend too much time ignoring it, we will suddenly find ourselves, looking backward at all the years we missed. Where did they go so fast?

Best to live life well while the clock ticks and there's daylight. For all of us, those sunny days are numbered.

Beautiful. The gradual unfolding of your impression was compelling. Well thought and penned.
