The Passing by John Herlihy ________________________________________ I walk quietly and reflectively thru these now empty rooms All the happy memories now swept away by life's brooms Trying to resurrect all the happiness that once happened Trying to remember all the happiness that still beckoned Listening to sweet melodies that played in my eardrums A heart that echoes compelling sounds of beaten drums The light of this world shines through visionary prisms Designed to capture the essence of mystical visions The horizon draws near as we approach the end Hours dwindle to minutes, a few more to lend The heart has settled in a manner most calm Whispers of the wind echo a sacred psalm Little to ponder, just one secret desire One smoldering ember still on fire Nothing else left need forsaking As we await a new awakening Now back where we belong Humming one simple song The mind settles down Silence the last sound Thru the sun door This life no more The final breath A life passing A final day Farewell - - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Friday 24 July 2026

Your poem creates a beautiful image of how our lives dwindle. Just yesterday, I thought about all of the authors that I used to communicate with that seem to be gone now when they don't answer my emails to them.

Our lives do become less involved until we are only doing what we need to survive each day before we are gone.

I must not be there yet because I'm so busy with so many things to do every day.
