 Winter’s Discontent

by John Herlihy

Winter – a cruel season
And often most unkind.
Winter – a beautiful season
And often most kind.

In the forest – fir trees
All dressed up in lace.
Blankets of snow freeze
Across the earth’s face.

White breath of winter
Breathing its Arctic chill.
Hard to forget, like a splinter
White breath to remember still.

Blinding blizzards instill fear
Moving forward as if blind.
The dark night no longer near
Our fears render winter unkind.

Buried graves in frozen ground
The departed spirit’s life spent.
Winter silence such raw sound
Left behind, winter’s discontent.

Enchanted evenings to reflect
As the white crystal flakes fall.
Night, snow, such ghostly effect
Winter’s grip holds us in thrall.

The cracking of winter ice
Evokes a ghostly presence.
The stately owl hoots thrice
In tribute to winter’s essence.

THERE IS WONDER IN EVERY SEASON AND EACH HAS ITS OWN BEAUTY. SO THEN, THE DISCONTENT OF WINTER IS WINTER LONGING TO BE ...SWALLOWED UP ...IN SPRING'S LAVISH RECOVERY. A FINE WORK, THANKS JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Another of your journeys across subjects that we often ignore and take for granted. I especially appreciated your last stanza as it brought the two facets of Nature into a resonant remembrance,

I can’t say I’m ready for winter yet but, this piece describes it perfectly!

You have neatly described the contradiction that winter is. Its beauty and its horror. So many species die in winter, and then are repopulated, or reseeded in the spring. Mammals like us have all sorts of adaptations to survive the winter.

Growing up where there was a harsh winter every year leaves me with good memories and bad. The beauty and joy of snow around Christmas time. The stillness in the forest during below zero days waiting for a squirrel to venture out.

Being cold all the time and catching childhood diseases from the low humidity. The dirty snow from cold dust and ash. The crust, slush and mud of constant thawing and refreezing.

Yes indeed, winter, (in my experiences) is a most beautiful, and at times frightening season. I've always had a love/hate relationship with it. I hated the winters in Chicago where I was born and raised. But I learned to love them in the Cuyamaca and Laguna Mountains where we live. What I glean from your piece: "winter's essence" is more than just a season of cold. It's also a mirror for human resilience, beauty, introspection, and the quiet magic of stillness. A sacred and reflective time that carries with it the promise of renewal. Expressed beautifully, John. Well done. Peace. r
