I Have Spent My Entire Life by John Herlihy I have spent my entire life, Preparing to write these words. I have lived my entire life, In the shadow of beautiful birds. I have walked a lonely way, In the valley of mountain peaks. I seek a message to convey, By the side of lonesome creeks. I am not afraid to be alone, Content to keep my own company. My life pared to the bone, Attempting to unveil life’s mystery. A journey on distant roads, Making efforts some future to avail. To carry my own loads, To purposefully into the future sail. Perhaps it could be said that those of us poets that are seriously using poetic thought to complete the journey, as you do, in the hopes that the purpose inherent in the aloneness that accompanies serious inner-probing, will justify and hopefully make a difference, as small or large, as might be the case... just as you have for years now, You've graciously shared your innermost convictions and I can say with equal conviction, you have made a serious difference in this poet.
