 In the Shadow of Night

by John Herlihy

Standing as tall as a sentinel
With arms beautifully extended
The tree drenched in sheets of rain
Raindrops dripping off the branches
Droplets rolling across the leaves
Before free-falling one by one below
Finding purchase at the tree’s base
Amid tangled roots and fractured canals
Running through the crevices of bark
Along the crusty edges of the oaken trunk
Dressed in the misty dew of after-rain
Splashes of green shimmering in moonglow
The wind settled after the storm – breathless
In the shadows of night, the stillness of starlight

John, your ability to phrase words of Nature into such insightful thought is admirable. The drenched tree gave me memories of many a climb with after a rain storm, between the rocks it was not unusual to find your rain drenched triee, twig, bush... that element of Nature cropping up in unexpected places can make one pause. Now the pause an be imbued with your peaceful text of wonder and appreciation. Thank you for posting.

Your rain-drenched tree standing in the 'shadow of night' with droplets running off the leaves, becomes more than a natural image. For this reader it blossoms into a metaphor for durability, introspection, and the cyclical nature of life. Resilience and endurance. Renewal and transformation. A living emblem of the human condition, where all of us are shaped by the storms we endure, and the quiet moments in which we find meaning. Thank you, John. Another quiet insight one can reflect on. Enjoyed. Peace. r
