Metaphorical - about the uncertainties and inner fears of adolescence.Growing up, for some, feels difficult.
The butterfly
‘As a caterpillar I mustn’t have stuffed
Myself enough’, the chrysalis said
As I have no energy now to get out
Of this trap around me and my head
It simply formed, I couldn’t move
But I need to get out and fly
I wonder how long I’ve been asleep
I’m hungry; I soon shall die’
‘Why didn’t I eat enough?
No one told me what came next
If my mother butterfly really knew
I think she would be vexed
Her child, stuck, with no way
Or energy to be free
Oh, well, maybe the world
Was never meant for me’
Then suddenly, it happened
As if through a narrow door
Out came a rather crumpled sight
It had life; it would do more
Gradually, basking in the sun
Its wings opened, colours bright
A beautiful butterfly was in view
It had survived and won its fight

“We’re going to use nine megaton warheads in space and we’re not sure they’re large enough to be effective. Why would you even consider using kiloton-range surface-to-air warheads as back-up?” The answer was succinct. “Because they’re all we have.”
