Poem Artwork

“There is only one difference

Between a long life and a good dinner;

That, in the dinner, the sweets come last.”

                              Robert Louis Stevenson

I sit and stare and ponder

At these five new miracles of birth

And I can remember my own past

When I was young and filled with mirth

Like these five newborn kittens

I couldn’t wait to leave the nest

I was young and brave and restless

Wanting to put my mettle to the test

New life is such a grand adventure

And most creatures live it very fast

But the excitement and the newness

Unfortunately never ever last

One day I awoke from my fantasy

And I realized that I was an adult

And my exciting adventures were over

What a shocking eye-opening jolt

As I sit and watch these five kittens

I wonder what their lives will be

And I truly hope they find happiness

And lives completely filled with glee

Our world can truly be a horrifying place

One filled with too much hate and bigotry

I truly hope they can escape all this

And only kindness will they see

Their mother would like to shelter them

As long as she possibly can

But eventually we all leave the nest

It’s part of Nature’s plan

And as their temporary caretaker

I would like to shelter them too

But if I dwell on the possibilities

It can tend to make me blue

Some adventures do await them

As do pain and suffering too

I hope their lives are peaceful

I really really do

I sit and stare and ponder

At these five new miracles of birth

And I can remember my own past

When I was young and filled with mirth

Many people don’t believe that cats have personalities;

When in reality, the exact opposite is true .  Each feline is unique; and felines

Can be as loving, and as loyal, as any canine I’ve ever owned.

Each of these newborn kittens has already displayed a unique personality;

Some of them are extremely shy, and some of them are quite bold.

I call the comical, yet somehow sage looking fellow, on the upper left, Groucho.

He has a delightful mustache, and four white paws, and he is their leader.

The dashing rogue on the upper right with the madcap black splotch on his face

Is the mischief maker and swashbuckler in the bunch.  I call him Slasher.

He already loves attacking my toes and fingers, and vigorously chewing on them.

And the three females in the middle are extremely sweet and demure,

Or so they pretend to be, as so many females do.

Cats can be extremely good actors and actresses, too.

Dear Ed,

What a gorgeous picture and what inspiration these kittens provided. Your trip down memory lane has produced memories of my own.

As to whether cats have personalities: I agree! I have rescued kittens from various places and the cannot foget a single one. They touched my life in various ways. My favourite was one named Lizzy, found in a compost heap. I guess I always was able to identify with the lost.

Your writing is exceptional Ed! Thanks

From a fellow animal lover
Chanti

PS: If you haven't already, please read 'Chickens, World Peace and Apartheid' (short story). I've found chickens have personalities too. *grin*

Dear Ed,

This really touches me so deeply, tears truly run. Groucho is so like my "Dinny" (he was alone in a cage) yet another one I could not resist, and brought home to meet the other nine, all of which too, were rescued or dumped with me. And yes, they certainly do have incredible individual personalities. Thank you both for your kind hearts.

Warm hugs and love
Elga

Ed and Becca, I want one of the kittens!!! But alas, I think the two already here would hate that idea, besides I'm allergic to cats!! I'm living on antihistimines right now and losing the battle!!!

Ed, the hard part is giving them up and watching their mother grieve over their departure. I am assuming you are having her spayed after they all go elsewhere...I know you both will find them good homes with people who will love them dearly!!!

You have written a heart touching write. Those little kitties will be heart stoppers for some lucky person or persons. I will be going to my shelter to look over their cats next week and I hope they don't think I'm too old to adopt one.

I like your poem and the wise way you have of being creative with life. The kittens remind me of a cat we had when I was a kid. We called it BW ( Black/White ). Guess we could of used your crreativity when naming our pet.
Super memory.
Thanks!
Susan

Ed that picture is incredible! I love this fantastic poem!
I agree about cats my Willow was so unique I should write
a story about her. I've had my share of dogs cats and birds
and I agree with you, they are all individual and highly
intelligent!With their own unique personalities.
Love the way you described your;-)!

Eyes that have a look of innocence are my greatest source of inspiration. If such eyes find some trouble, I try to assist them in anyway I can. Liked the way you described their personalities

Awww kind heart this made my heart so weak.....wish I could hold them or even give them a home...but hey I guess that would be quite a mission to send a little feline like that to South Africa!!

This brought a tear to my eye buddy!!

Glad they did not get hurt with your "Light" episode...lol!!

This is sweet, Ed. I remember having to find homes for my puppies. It was hard to let them go. I wanted to make sure that their new owner would take good care of them, but I mostly felt for their mother. I could tell she wasn't ready for them to go, and I felt bad having to make that decision for her. I liked this poem, very much.

Loco and Frey D. Katt have completely different purrsonalities. Loco likes to bite and bite hard, even though we know she's only trying to be playful. Frey D. Katt is totally sweet and loving. Yep, that's right, Frey D. Katt is the one who viciously bit my finger so hard I had to go to the doctor the first day I had him. See what a little tender loving care will do for a bad relationship?
Cute baby kitties you got there--five little bundles of feline joy.

not everyone would be touched by the birth of a litter of cats
and you find yourself pondering your own life as well as their
future........that is so beautifiul to me.......

this is a lovely poem, i love your rhyme, but most of all the sentiment......

and no
i don't want a cat...........just incase you were hoping

I know you wouldn't be referring to 'females' of the 'human nature' now would you Ed? lol
Thse are adorable kittens! One only has to read your poetry to know you hold a tender heart and a loving demeanor for all of God's creatures.
Thanks Ed....Lisa
