Poem Artwork

“Time is but the stream

I go a-fishing in.”

Henry David Thoreau

They say that one picture

Is worth a thousand words

And very often with a snapshot

Thousands of memories unfurl

Memories that you’ve never lost

But that you’ve gently tucked away

Memories you don’t think about much

Until you spot them in a snapshot one day

I was rummaging through some old photos

When I came upon this tattered old pic

And my soul was suddenly transported there

To that wooden porch and that old home of brick

I was suddenly kneeling out on that back porch

On a delightfully cool city summer’s day

With my loyal canine companion Mousie

A sweet dog who always loved to play

She and I would romp through that old backyard

Gazing with awe upon my grandmother’s flowers

Then we’d pitch the old canvas tent and camp out

Pretending we were in the jungle – great explorers

Grandma would eventually call out to us

Bringing cold milk a sandwich and some pie

While the three of us sat out on that little city porch

Laughing and giggling as the day merrily sauntered by

After lunch Grandma would tend to her garden

While little Mousie and I watched and learned

I was fascinated by Grandma’s knowledge

And to be as smart as her I yearned

Soon she’d take us to the old canning shed

And I would marvel at all the delectable treats

That my grandmother had so diligently prepared

Some were tangy tart and some were oh so sweet

Eventually as the bright summer sun would set

The three of us would eagerly head back inside

To a marvelous ethnic home cooked meal

Grandma always prepared with love and pride

Memories that you’ve never lost

But that you’ve gently tucked away

Memories you don’t think about much

Until you spot them in a snapshot one day

Ed, you’re not kidding when you say a snapshot is worth a thousand words…lol. This is a very well-written sentimental sensitive journey through the memories of your life, which included taken your many readers and admires along with you. I was a pleasure going there. You have a very gifted talent and I thank you for sharing it. That’s a great picture. Take care.

Aaaaaah Eddie, so lovely my eyes went misty with memories of my own. I have been thinking about pulling all my photographs out (I have literally thousands being a wannabee photographer) and reminiscing as you have done here. I love doing this with my three children because we have so many laughs looking back. The biggest laughs are usually reserved for my cake-baking efforts (each year's cake has been snapped for the record). They literally hooted with laughter the last time while looking at my monster cake with the monster lips.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful poem.

What a sweet picture, Eddie!
You know...the comments in your poem justify the reason
I have been a photographer for most of my life.
For me...photos are fleeting moments cemented in emulsion...
and recalled at a future time when they are needed most...
by both the subject and the viewer.

Wonderful memory. Just like the snapshot your poem triggered so much of my childhood era. Loved the picture. Your grand mother reminded me of my mother, especially the marvelous skills she had to cook food. My mom was just like her. I even suspected sometimes that she spoke with the fire. Though mom died I still remember the taste of food she prepared and I wish to write a book about her under the Title "Fire Queen"
