“Boom boom boom boom.
Gonna shoot you right down.
Right off your feet.
Take you home with me.
Put you in my house.
Boom boom boom boom.”

John Lee Hooker,

Boom Boom

It was the middle of February

Cabin Fever had truly set in

I needed to get out of the house

I needed a new adventure to begin

But never did I realize

This day would be so icy cruel

This particular winter escapade

Sure gave me those ice fishin blues

I woke up edgy and anxious

It was a frigid winter dawn

That’s when it suddenly hit me

A new idea had quickly spawned

I soon got on the telephone to my brother

Told him we were gonna try a winter sport

Told him to bring his wife and my nephew

And of course I dragged my wife - up north

We quickly drove up to frozen Green Lake

And I soon rented an old ice fishin shanty

And man was she ever a cozy wooden beauty

Even had a pot-bellied stove - mighty handy

My family wanted to carry all our gear

Out onto the vast frozen lake surface

I of course drove right out to the shanty

“Man, why are you people so nervous?”

I quickly cut some holes in the ice

While the ladies fixed us some lunch

But nothin was really bitin today

Maybe this had been a bad hunch

We sat there all day in that shanty

And as the sun was sinkin low

We climbed into my new truck

And were sadly headin home

That’s when we heard a big B-O-O-M

Then we soon heard a loud C-R-A-C-K

Before I knew what was even happenin

My family had jumped out the truck’s back

My truck had suddenly broken through the ice

It was about to go down the deep deep blue drain

But damn it anyway - it was a brand new truck

So of course I refused to get out – I’m insane

Luckily a Good Samaritan happened by

And threw me a long rope from his winch

I frigidly swam around to the back bumper

And tied my new truck to it – in a pinch

The Good Samaritan pulled me out of this wet jam

But as he did – B-O-O-M – two tires on my truck blew

Now I was really fit to be tied

Those damned tires were brand new too

After I finally bought two more tires

We were finally headin back home

No one in my family would speak to me

So I spent the next two months – alone

It was the middle of February

Cabin Fever had truly set in

I needed to get out of the house

I needed a new adventure to begin

But never did I realize

This day would be so icy cruel

This particular winter escapade

Sure gave me those ice fishin blues

This took me back to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan(upper peninsula). Only where it gets really cold do you find a lake frozen-how about 54 degrees below counting the windchill? Falling into that kind of water would literally give you the "ice-fishing blues"! Thanks, Pat

Thanks. Put a smile on my face. Sounds like you do what I read about. And you write about it in very readable "as though it were fiction" style. This and some of your other titles conjure up childhood images of Jack London's Call of the Wild. Liked your ice photo.

Jaysus, LE, it's stuff like this that is going to make your wish come true: NO PEOPLE FOR MILES AND MILES AROUND YOU! (no self-respecting critter, either, I dare say)!

Sigh... you are an adventurer, 'tis true, not to mention a bit squirrely! ... and not one fish to make it worth it? ahhhh... that's a shame. hehe... katy xox.

I think you might be getting the impression that you are largely on your own on this one, Ed... seems to me the ice is just getting thinner and thinner as the rest of us say "Thanks, but no thanks" and wish you well from the distant security of terra firma, warma and safa (safe-a!!), muffled up in our bearskins (fake ones, of course!!) So know the feelin', but it can be very alarming which way we jump in a crisis as a knee-jerk reaction, can't it?! Hopefully saving life will ALWAYS win out over saving the material - no matter how precious!! Hmmm, maybe some thoughts for a few "iceberg" poems here?! Yup, you can tell I 'm gonna struggle with this theme, can't you?! Even with your encyclopaedia of information - without which I would be seriously Titanicked!! LOL Kalving Kate - see I've learnt something already!! xx

Wow, Ed, what an adventure. I know what you mean about that cabin fever though. And it gets worse with me the older I get. Glad you survived this to poetically story tell it. Here's one of my adventures that happened on vacation. One of my tires went almost flat. We stopped to get it repaired. the man found that all my tires had two nails apiece in them. he told me he couldn't plug them, it was against company rules. so I brought the best tire plugging kit i could find. it took me a couple of hours with the cheap tire kit to plug all my tires. then one of them went flat again the next morning. i ended up buying four new tires so we could continue our vacation.

Another name for little eddie eskimo ed you sure do tell
a tall tale well, you rhyme and make it sound so swell;-)
and then you make me laugh like hell;-)

If this truly happened it reminds me of that picture with
Robert Alda and Carol Burnett "the four seasons", I think was
the name. Anyway this was great and I love your adventures!

Love, Eileen

You can think of more "artistic" ways to get into trouble than
anyone I know (except maybe the 'other' Ed?).

The graphic is super...the poem is too...
