Poem Artwork
-->

It’s Summertime,

And the livin ain’t been too easy

It was another scorcher today

Temperature over Ninety-Five

It’s so hard to breathe in this city

Everyone here seems barely alive

It’s been too damn hot and humid

Most folks here are staying indoors

Their air conditioners are on full blast

And they can’t take too very much more

A severe drought has ravaged our old town

We haven’t had a good soaking rain since May

Making everyone here hot irritated and lethargic

And it’s truly hard to find any energy left to play

The once green summer plants are all wilting

The many city trees look so sad and forlorn

The birds in the parks are too parched to chirp

And the yellow grass looks all burnt and worn

But night has finally fallen

In this huge city of my birth

So I load my two dogs in my truck

And I drive off to find a little mirth

We soon launch our small fishing boat

And motor off into the deep vast black lake

The smog-filled city lights lie right before us

And even out on the water there is nary a wake

Miraculously a gentle wisp of a lake breeze

Slowly begins to drift towards us in the night

It’s so shockingly cool and so unexpected

All three of us immediately sigh with delight

I had ventured out on this enormous lake

To do a little summertime night fishing

But the water looks so invitingly cool

I soon find myself quickly undressing

I excitedly jump right overboard

And I’m soon quite thoroughly refreshed

My two panting mutts don’t waste another second

Quickly discovering this cold water is simply the best

Eventually a huge school of Chinook salmon

Brushes past us in the very calm moonlit lake

I swear a few of them look like twenty pounders

But tonight their freedom is definitely not at stake

Instead after our truly invigorating midnight city swim

My two dogs and I drift serenely through the summer night

It’s so wonderfully quiet and cool and soothing out here now

And finally thankfully once again summer seems just about right

It’s Summertime,

And the livin is easy again

I have been hearing about the heat while swimming in the daily rain storms.......If I could I would send some down to you and the other with only one request........send us the heat!

What a vivid picture you paint Ed, but there is a blanket of heat covering the mid-west too, high 90's today, no breeze, no lake, but no snow either....so bring on the heat! Enjoy your lovely lake escape.

Peace and love, Carole

It is very hot and humid too here in Toronto, Canada. I'm so glad you've found some ways to entertain yourselves. Staying in the water is coool fun.

We hit 22, about 74 F. The heat and humidity I found unbarable in the US too...
Blimey if the ocean is in upper 70's at 76.2 F, causes hurricanes..

oh Ed I really feel for you having seen that you will be over 100% today. Having lived in that humidity I would have to leave the city if I were still in the vicinity...Hope it isn't too bad for you. Thank God for the lake.Maybe you'll be camping out there;-) Take care, btw, great write!;-)

Surprised you don't glow in the dark after your nighttime swim, and be glad that sharks are usually only in salt water, though they have been found in fresh up rivers that empty into the sea...even at the ocean, yesterday, the air was in the upper 90's and the ocean in the upper 70's, not even enough to cool ya off that much...enjoy your nighttime dips...winter is coming...Ed

Today, at noon we are already at 103 degrees - heck my glasses steam over when I walk outside. But jumping in a lake, you already cooled me down, a good day for laying in the water and not much else. We, too, are in a drought, which I think makes it seem so much hotter... great refreshing write

ooooooo... Little Eddie... this is not just a dreamy delight to read, but practically palpable... DE-licious! Sigh... relief from the heat is the goal of us all.

A man and his dogs, saving salmon... nude swimming at its finest (and finest hour!) I pictured it all and grinned hugely! katy xox

Best yet ED
Now I want to swim, but can't
Took a fall an busted my butt
Scraped my knees like a kid
in the park
was just trying to keep up with my grandsons
a handful
And we have a pool in our back area
I remember those hot summer nights in New York City
As a kid we used to sleep out on the fire escape,
see we had no air, just a piece of cardboard
to fan ourselves to sleep
enjoyed your write

William .....Peace
