“Time Spent With a Cat,

Is Never Wasted.”

Colette

We lost our beloved Princess Gabby yesterday

Now there is a void in our hearts and in our home

Utter sadness hangs heavily in the air and in our souls

And my thick wet unstoppable teardrops stain this poem

To me it seems like only yesterday

That I found her at that big city pound

She had been abandoned in an apartment

She lay dazed in her cage without a sound

She was already eight years of age at the time

Hardly anyone ever adopts such an elderly cat

She had already been scheduled to be euthanized

Life had been truly cruel to her no doubt about that

So I picked her up and tried to comfort her

She clung to my chest not wanting to let go

And her morose eyes pierced my very soul

So I put her in my car and I drove her home

Gabby blossomed into a real sweetheart

Ever grateful for her second chance in life

She very quickly became our feline Princess

She was loved by our other animals and my wife

She soon became our official tummy warmer on cold winter nights

When we returned home she always lovingly greeted us at the door

She was the only feline we’ve ever had who actually talked to us

And she became a treasured family member whom we all adored

She graced us with her loving presence for 10 years

Even my two dogs came to like and respect our Gabby

All our pets seem extremely sad and subdued right now

Especially her best pal our elderly male Buddy the tabby

Liver cancer recently began ravaging our Gabby’s body

But she never complained and her brave spirit never died

This time around it was I who clung fiercely to her tiny chest

And as my beloved Princess left us I cried and cried and cried

We lost our beloved Princess Gabby yesterday

Now there is a void in our hearts and in our home

Utter sadness hangs heavily in the air and in our souls

And my thick wet unstoppable teardrops stain this poem

I will be away for a few weeks; once again heading back down to the Gulf coast.  Maybe helping these lost and homeless critters will ease the pain of Gabby’s loss a bit.  I hope to bring home a tiny black and white orphan of the storm, and name her Katrina Gabby.  I think our Princess would like that.

And please find it in your heart to help these lost and traumatized Katrina waifs any way you can:

Brought tears to me as I read this, thinking about how I would miss any one of my seven sweethearts! Blessings to you, Ed, for giving Gabby the opportunity to bring her beauty to your family.

Ed, so sorry for your loss! I know the sorrow of loosing a beloved pet. They become like one of our children but they give so much more than we ever could. I have loss a 19 yr old female cocker "precious" this year and then my little male jack russel mix Peanut. My heart still breaks for both of their loss. As much as I miss them I have to believe that God will allow me to see them again someday. You take care down at the Gulf and I hope you find a wonderful pet to help ease the pain. So very sad for you Ed..............

I am so very sorry, Ed, I know the deep sadness that rips at us when we lose one of our beloved babies. My cat is nearly 18 and showing many of the signs of aging. Each day I shed a few tears knowing that one day, she will no longer be at the door to greet me when I come home. Your sadness and your words honor Gabby's memory and your tender heart is responsible for her longevity. Be safe and keep well. The lost and displaced critters of the world need all the help we can give them.
Take care,
Sherry

What a beauty, Ed. So sorry to hear of your loss. My cats are my children and I grieve over the lost ones all the time. I have had many, many too. The last one I lost was a beauty too...a Siamese I named Ling-Ling. She didn't die, she chose to carry off her brood of 6 newborns and I have not seen her since. Take care. Penni

Is there a dry eye in the house? "Weep with those who weep and mourn with those who mourn..." if you could feel it, another Noah's Flood would be on this page, Ed. Brings back so many memories of moments of my own... and puts me in mind of what is also yet to come - hopefully not yet awhile though... but, my goodness!! A whole 10 years MORE when she was already elderly?! You were not a home for her, you were HEAVEN!! And you'll still hear her talking, Ed, I am sure... in uncanny ways, she will speak into your moments and you will know EXACTLY what they mean. She will never, ever leave your chest, Pal. This is just the most gorgeous tribute that I would be pleased to have, let alone a beloved pet... and hurry up and get that blonde, spikey job back as well so that the Turner can be well, too: you know, one with a decent liver... and Katrina's got to have... boobs - ALL of them! :))

Cats allow us to dream their dreams (Animal Wisdom). For so many years, she allowed you to dream her dreams, since that very first moment when you found her. Through her dreams, I believe, was how you first entered her life, and how she went on to become an important part of yours. Now, you will never be apart, because, even if she has departed physically from your side, she lives with you forever... in her dreams of you, in your dreams of her.
Helping others, like you helped your beautiful Princess when she was abandoned, is the best tribute you can ever pay her, dear Ed. May you be blessed for your endless generosity, and may all your efforts be crowned with success... for the sake of their lives, and their dreams.

Oh Eddie this has me in tear too my friend...because I lost one of my dogs aswell today....only still a pup but he actually talked to me too...and I decided to keep him....but for some reason my big dog "Killer" did not like him ...jealousy I think and that caused his death!! He became withdrawn and did not mix with the others too scared to show face...because the big boss was too agressive rowards him!! And today was just one unlucky day for him when I was not near..the accident happened!!

Warm hugs to you...and I just want to say I am sooooo sorry for your loss...but at the end maybe better for Gabby's sake!!

Hi Ed:

So sorry to hear about what had happened to Princess. I know the feeling just tooo well. It is okay to feel sad, and it is okay to cry for Princess. She deserves the tears for her.

I have lost my beloved "Freddy", who grew up with us in his whole lifetime. We got him from the animal shelter when he was 10 months old, he only passed away last April when he was 16. We were all so sad to see him leave, but the vet said he had lots of problems and could not be saved. It was better for him to leave so he didn't need to suffer.

Princess is now happy in heaven, and is a guardian angel to all of you who love her. She is now pain-free and happy. In time, you will be feeling happy for her too.

Take care.
