Poem Artwork
-->               “The soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.”

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

The arctic wind whipped and howled

Along the grey lakefront yesterday

It was an eerie bone chilling sound

Filled with terrible tidings some say

It was definitely not the type of day

Fit for strolling about the frigid city

Even from their lofty grey-hued condos

No tenants thought the view very pretty

A grey-haired woman in a very pricey high rise

Spotted a disheveled man down by the lakeshore

He was vehemently shivering in his thin grey jacket

He was distraught hungry and homeless yet once more

Then unbelievably she saw him jump

Feet first into the icy grey lake water

She immediately dialed 911 Emergency

Then quickly made a call to her daughter

The brave fire department diving squad

Eventually recovered the man’s corpse

It had a forlorn lifeless grey-colored hue

Filling them all with sadness and remorse

They found a note inside the man’s grey jacket

Asking anyone who read it for his soul to pray

He’d been down on his luck for far too long now

And he just couldn't face yet one more grey day

The tragic tale of this homeless man

Was buried in my Sunday paper today

And now my soul is sadly grey-tinged too

Since he was an old Vietnam vet named Ray

Very sad and touches the heart deeply. It is a loss to all when we loose one.

Sad indeed, but from what I've observed of humanity if the Vet had any obvious mental or emotional flaws like traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or the latest glamour diagnosis amateur, armchair psychologists like to slap on anyone that they feel doesn't fit in with their comfortable lives or who makes them nervous--borderline personality disorder--he was probably shoved aside by his friends and loved ones until he felt the best thing to do was jump. It's rarely what the government or some major institution won't do for us that makes us feel forgotten and neglected. It's usually what individuals we see in our everyday lives won't do for us or how they refuse to connect to us that makes us feel forgotten, neglected, and isolated. Yes, we weep when we read stories like this but when we have to deal with such people in the flesh, we have no patience much less compassion. Our lives are full and we're too busy for the broken. We want the government or some mysterious force to care for them. Either way, you have an effective write here, Ed. ~~Nordette

This country stinks!! pardon me Ed, but it does! I hope DC and all other mucky mucks and citizens get this poem and story of this Honorable Man, Ray,
and what they, the c.'s & m.m.'s selfishly have done and continue to do.

Although offered in a scale of greys, this deeply poignant writing overflows with all the colours of deep, heartfelt, genuine compassion. And this makes it a beautiful tribute to that soul who was denied colour for much too long. You are a man of Goodness, dear Ed.

it's a sad statement that our government forgets many vets who have served their country ... they feel they have been abandoned and have no recourse but to end their suffering and neglect ...

powerful write ...

Sadly enough, this is tragic end for some who are down on their lucks. Some also froze to death. I think no matter how our finance situation is - if we can spare some to help the unfortunate, we really should. This is how we can make this world a better place.
