Poem Artwork
-->                         “Sam crossed the Majestic Mountains,
                                           To the valleys far below;
He talked to his team of huskies,
As he mushed on through the snow.”

North to Alaska,

Johnny Horton

My eyes began to sparkle like Christmas lights

When I saw the huge gift-wrapped box marked ‘Ed’

My lovely spouse had given me a truly unique present

It’s been my dream gift since childhood – a dog team sled

And very luckily for both myself and my very hardy dog team

We awoke to a very White Christmas just outside our front door

This blessed Christmas morning gave us the perfect opportunity

To get in shape and start a rigorous training program once more

As I eagerly harnessed up my brave and devoted canine team

My thoughts soon flew north to Alaska this glorious snowy morn

I kept thinking about this wild frontier’s extremely captivating history

Where travel was only possible by dog sled – where legends were born

Where supplies mail and life saving medicines

Were delivered by mushers and their heroic dogs

Where gold was discovered and hauled out in tons

As they raced past majestic mountains and pine logs

But my biggest obstacle at this very moment

Was convincing my team to pull my new sled

Tiny Chica Blanca insisted on riding in it with me

My other dogs preferred wrestling in the snow instead

But I’m also convinced that this will only be a very minor obstacle

As soon as my loyal team gets the idea into their very loyal furry heads

Soon it will be onward and upward for all five of us – and North to Alaska

“OK, Guys! Mush, Mush!” but they seemed not to hear a single word I said

- But a Dreamer Never Gives Up His Dream -

More rapid than eagles his four brave canines they now came,

And he whistled, and he shouted, and he called them by name;

Now, Junior! Now, Chica Blanca! Now, Tater and old Turbo!

The wilds of Alaska Await Us; So Mush Mush Team, Let’s Go!

My Lifelong Dream of Living in Alaska Continues

I’ve journeyed there many times basking in its scenery

My spouse somehow can’t seem to warm up to this idea

But I know my dog team and I would be in Heavenly Glee

And I keep reminding my wife that her Apache ancestors

Are related to ancient Alaskan natives called the Athabascan

But she keeps insisting that she’s moving back to New Mexico

“You can go alone to the frozen north, You Crazy Little Big Man!”

- But a Dreamer Never Gives Up His Dream -

What a delightful story this is, Ed. A mush dog is born, not created, so you have your work cut out for you. LOL Alaska is a gorgeous place, I can certainly understand your desire to be there, but I am with your wife on this one. New Mexico is my kind of place; somehow Jemez Hot Springs sounds like a much nicer place to retire.
Take care,
Sherry

If your honey doesn't warm up to visiting Alaska, Karen and I would gladly go in her stead......................PRETTY PLEASE?????????? And here I joined the Air Force to travel, all the way down my dream sheet, Alaska.....never left Texas!!!!!!!!! BAH the humbugs!

Cute and a sweet work. Actually many native Americans came accross the Bering Straights many moons ago to populate North America. I have Cherokee ancestors.

I hope you get to Alaska and realize your dream some day. That is what dreams are for...to create hope.

Wished you would go to the Iditarod so I could get some information from you, Ed. I am writing a novel in progress, The Rudder of Nome: Fur Journey, the excerpt posted in my den. I say compromise the gold pan and the Quesadilla skillet pan. Talk it over with Rebecca over Margaritas and Quesadillas. That'll warm her heart. A nugget of a write, Ed. I love that song North to Alaska. It's an oldie, but a goodie! I'll be looking for you and Rebecca's reflection in the spring kettle pond of Alaska, those perfect round ponds formed from a chunk of glacier falling off, a good place for the dogs to drink.

It seems like a fair compromise. Summer in Alaska and Winter in New Mexico. You and Jack London would have been great friends. Your poetry is always the best no matter what the subject matter you excel at rhyme and the stories you tell in each poem. No wonder that you are an acclaimed Author of many books.

- But a Dreamer Never Gives Up His Dream -
This is so true, dear friend! And would you believe that yesterday Joseph and I were actually talking about our dream of travelling to Alaska soon? He dreams of the Northern Lights, I dream of Nature still pristine and untouched, in all its magnificence, we both dream of clear waters, crystal skies, air as pure as when it was first born, trees and flowers as beautiful as in the pure vision of a child, animals living in such beauty and freedom... and all this in Summer, because Joseph doesn't dream - has nightmares, more likely - of ice and snow, LOL! Anyway, what really is important is to never allow one's dreams to "melt away", so my wishes are that all of yours will smoothly carry you and your loved ones to your most hoped for Universes! (Well... maybe your wife will reconsider, if you concede to go to Alaska in summer and to New Mexico in winter. Maybe we'll all meet in both places, someday! ;0)
May your New Year overflow with Love&Light*

BTW WE HAVE GOT SNOW. IT IS SNOWING NOW... The last time was in early 92 or 93...Yesssssssss.. Funny how all the squirrels and birds seemed to know in advance. As the war out back has a cease fire today.
Just a depressed cat waiting in hope...
