“There is a way that nature speaks, that the land speaks.

Most of the time we are simply not patient enough,

Or quiet enough, to pay attention to the story.”

Linda Hogan

About an hour before dawn

As continued sleep evades

I silently slip out of the house

In deep snowdrifts I now wade

Soon I’m in the deep forest

So very silent and so serene

The only sound - my boots

Upon the fresh snow so clean

I soon sit upon a fallen birch tree

And the forest soothes my very soul

I love its very early morning tranquility

For me this ancient realm never grows old

Suddenly a very melodious call

A male cardinal sings out to his mate

And she soon lovingly responds in kind

For this new dawn together they’ll now wait

Then I hear an extremely lonely call

From high upon a windy snowy ridge

But very soon a very joyous answer

From underneath the old river bridge

This mating pair of coyotes

Soon meet up on the frigid hill

Rejoicing together again at dawn

Their reunion giving both a thrill

As I turn and head back home

They now trot off to their den

Safe together for one more day

As a brand new winter day begins

And when I finally reach my destination

My spouse lovingly calls down the hall

And I immediately respond to her in kind

In our very own winter’s day mating call

There is a way that nature speaks, that the land speaks,

That the creatures of the forest speak.

Most of the time we are simply not patient enough,

Or quiet enough, or observant enough,

To pay attention to earth’s very ancient

And very wondrous love story.

Nature is a thing of wonder - not to be understood but to be enjoyed - It helps to be a contemplative. Great work Ed that you can share this with your fellowmen - Always a joy to view your work

Ed - Your offering is beautiful and complete. You're a natural born naturalist, and to you, this comes easier than to many of us in our knucklehead, live faster, and stupid decision making. I love your poem and the message in it. I, too, have had similar times in life, but haven't, before now, thought about how meaningful they were. I THANK YOU, SIR !

Have memorable New Year's welcoming at your house. - Bill

Stimulated by Nature, eh? Lucky, lucky you! Enjoyed your mating call...somehow, though, I doubt your wife would want you to howl at her...hope you sing like the cardinal! :) Excellent.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

... what happens next, I wonder... hmmm, don't think I'll let my imagination wander too far off into those snowy white drifts otherwise I may never make it back! This Narnian chill is already giving way to a rip-roaring spring on this page, I think, Ed! Love is DEFINITELY in the air. Bout time too.... seems a long time since Christmas... well, what do you expect? Me to be sensible?! Perhaps it should be my New Year's Resolution... not!! :) We are on the same page today, believe it or not... kinda sort of and after a fashion... in title, at any rate... Happy New Deer, Dad xxxxxxxxxx

And the mating call should go out each day. Though the voice is familiar, it is always beautiful to hear.

I agree with Joselyn below, nature has its own special code and language
And you interpret it beautifully and serenely in this captivating and compelling composition Ed !
I love to see the bright red cardinals flitting between their song posts, and hear the haunting and lonely yips of the coytotes late at night
That is a marvellous Linda Hogan quote, with an entrancing picture that sums it all up
Have a super New Year 2006 for you and yours

Thanks for reminding us of how great nature is - especially the mating part. In the spring and summer months I live by a northern lake with Ospreys, otters, geese, ducks, skunks and fish. If you really listen to all the excited creatures, it can be deafening. Just don't get too close to the skunks!

I rarely go out in the early morn anymore but if you live near a wooded area these sounds are forever being sung; before the break of day you will hear them as nature echoes them through the forest. The call of the wild both in human voices and animal cries. Splendid write.

Ed, I love that Disney song, til' you can paint with all the colours of the wind. Man, people can laugh, but the Disney songbook is just glorious, and now wee Elton has joined with his Circle of Life and Can you Feel the Love Tonight. Magic! I endorse the sentiments of this poem 100 per cent. Ol' Coyote on the snowy hillside, he knows his love is just across the way.... :-) kenny
