“Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth

Are never alone or weary of life.”

Rachel Carson

A winter’s day in Utah

Not another soul around

Walking in the wilderness

Blissful serenity I had found

Soft white snow upon the red rocks

Icy water rushing past me in the creek

A much needed break from civilization

I had found another haven that I did seek

Soon a red-tailed hawk soars overhead

And a mule deer comes down for a drink

And a curious rabbit peers from the pines

I am truly not as alone as some might think

But these winged and hoofed and furred creatures

Do not attempt to bother me or disturb my serenity

They watch me and I observe them for quite awhile

And then I journey on - my heart now filled with glee

Here in this vibrant undisturbed ancient land

Gloriously unmolested for countless centuries

On soil where ancient peoples once wandered

Viewing the same glorious wonders I did see

A serene and solitary sojourn through our natural world

Always manages to soothe my world weary heart and soul

And on each and every journey into our planet’s wild places

I am awed by splendors that are ancient magnificent and bold

A winter’s day in Utah

Not another soul around

Walking in the wilderness

Blissful serenity I had found

This is peacefully therapeutic, Ed. It makes one yearn to be there. The image complements the verses most effectively as well. Thank you for sharing this gift. Love and peace,

Restful and evocative. I shudder to think what we would do if we could not retreat to the peace and serenity that Nature when left to her own devices willingly provides. B e a u t y. Thank you for helping me breathe. 'Pea' <3

I'm captured by the images you paint with words Ed. Sometimes they are clearer than a picture would be, for they come from heart and soul that is one with the universe and especially the wilderness.
Thank you for sharing this beauty, it uplifts and inspires.
I love the pic too;-)

I would love to hear this narrated on a cable nature program, accompanied with the picture ... and then the video tape silenced for the rest of the hour with a slide show. Great meditative focus, Ed. I use it today to calm my mind before I start another day's writing. Thanks from the bottom of my soul/sole as I walk this peaceful Utah journey with you. Blessed Be.

Ed,

GORGEOUS! I loved Utah in the winter. Too bad they're having much more than usual...wish they'd send some of that moisture down Texas/Oklahoma way....................we're burning up here!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I could feel at peace while reading this poem. We so mistreat this earth -- places like that are like a heaven -- should be, and should be respected. Thank you Ed.

Lovely work. I remember reading Rachel Carson many, many, many (did I say many) years ago. You don't hear much about her any more, but nearly everything she predicted has come true. Her work is something to review. Thanks for the reminder, too. We all need to stay vigilent.

Nature's cathedral-how much closer to God could we be? I'm reminded of the 23rd Psalm, "...He leadeth me beside the still waters, He restoreth my soul..." Beautiful write, Ed!

Winter Solitude - What a beautiful scene and poem - I see you are truly a contemplative = my heart missed a beat and then jumped for joy at the thought of how you could be lost in a dream world of your own making

Utah is heaven on earth, another world completely Ed, with its magnificent and ancient red sandstone rock and utter wildness !
This poem elevates the spirits, and transports you into a natural and magical world of nature and the presence of God !
I love the Rachel Carson quote, and accompanying picture, which sets the tone !

Divine indeed. Clears the mind and soul. I would rather walk in a bear and other wildlife area, than the cities wild-life..
