Poem Artwork
-->

“Love is the beauty of the soul.”

St. Augustine

Have you ever felt that you were constantly paddling upstream

Have your ever felt that modern life was very often too obscene

Have you ever prayed to God to take all your pain away

Have you ever sprawled in bed dreading yet another day

Have you ever vehemently complained but felt no one listened

I did all of the above until one dawn as I sat in my own kitchen

That’s when I lifted the blinds in my home to peer at another day

That’s when my own utter blindness eventually evaporated away

I forgot all about my petty troubles and watched an amazing sight

Somehow my load lightened and my soul journeyed to new heights

There before my own eyes I saw an extremely edifying event

There before my eyes a wondrous spectacle – miraculously sent

Six baby sparrows were forlornly sprawled upon the ground

Six lost and lonely newborns – no hope of survival to be found

They had tumbled forlornly from their nest in the middle of the night

They were now sadly alone and afraid - sobbing desperately in fright

They were now like many of we humans on any typical day

They were now like we humans - trapped in their own dismay

Suddenly from out of nowhere - their very loving mother did appear

And she quickly calmed and sang to them – and swept away their fear

Soon she nurtured each one of her six tiny offspring

Soon she even encouraged each one of them - to sing

At that wondrous moment I heard a life-affirming symphony

At that wondrous moment my clouded eyes could finally see

That’s when mother sparrow did another truly amazing thing

She lovingly and patiently coaxed each one of them - to wing

Soon all seven sparrows soared high into the morning sky

Soon my eyes were misting and joyous teardrops I did cry

Now my enlightened soul was suddenly soaring skyward too

Now my two enlightened eyes had been gloriously renewed

At that very moment I knew that all beings truly struggle on this earth

But love – true love - can fill even a very tiny sparrow’s heart with mirth

Have you ever considered ‘love’ to be more than just another word

Have you ever given your love as freely as this tiny feathered bird

Have you ever realized how uplifting love can truly be

Or are you yet too blinded - too unwilling to perceive

Have you ever offered love to those whom you know cry

Have you ever really watched - - a tiny sparrow learn to fly?

Well, my eyes are misting up cos I thought this pome was about the gift, nurture and healing qualities of song, Ed... either way, a spirit of rejoicing and a mind full of love DOES contribute to the "wings" effect, enabling us to "rise above it"... must be a tune in there somewhere??!! Can I start with Doe A Deer?? Kate von Trapp(shut - would be a good idea...) xx

This is a truly scintillating and powerful poem Ed, which conveys a great message that Love rules the world,in every Dominion and Field, and the symbols of the sparrows is very significant, which reminds us that Our Lord Jesus Christ is aware of everything in existence at all times, even when a single sparrow falls to the ground !
I love that moving St Augustine quote and the brilliant picture of the house sparrow and co !
You have outdone yourself with this extraordinary pen !

What a joy! Ed you outdid yourself with this gem! It shows so beautifully how our Creator works in all of His creation to bring about our awakening to His Spirit. For He is the source of all, and when we acknowledge Him and His creation, our eyes and ears become completely opened. Thanks for sharing your love with all of life...
